QUINTA DO JARDIM

GYMNASTICS ACADEMY

The proposal responds to the competition brief by creating an urban park capable of harmoniously integrating the existing landscape with two new public facilities: the Ciência Viva Centre and the Gymnastics Academy. The goal is to transform Quinta do Jardim into a continuous, accessible, and high-quality territory that simultaneously enhances its natural heritage, everyday life, and cultural and sports activities.

The park is conceived as a living ecological structure that evolves from an understanding of the topography, tree masses, and water lines. The intervention reinforces biodiversity and prioritizes sustainable solutions such as permeable pavements, natural drainage, and responsible environmental maintenance. The pathways are organic and adapted to the terrain, promoting gentle mobility and inviting a gradual discovery of the site. Through clearings, shaded areas, and gathering spaces, distinct rhythms of use are created, ranging from contemplation to active leisure. This strategy is based on three guiding principles — transformation, movement, and integration — which ensure coherence between landscape, architecture, and community.

The Ciência Viva Centre is designed as a learning space that extends into the outdoors. Positioned to minimize its impact on the landscape, the building interacts with courtyards, educational gardens, and small scientific stations distributed throughout the park. Laboratories, exhibition rooms, and experimentation areas are organized to foster curiosity and allow science to take place both inside and outside the building, using nature itself as an open laboratory.

The Gymnastics Academy complements this dynamic, functioning as a hub for training, education, and competition. Its placement respects the terrain’s morphology and is integrated into the surroundings through outdoor areas that support sports practice. The building combines specialized gymnastics facilities with community-use spaces, strengthening the connection between physical activity, well-being, and the everyday life of the park.

Overall, the proposal promotes a symbiotic relationship between nature, science, and sport, creating a contemporary and inclusive public space that is deeply rooted in the character of Quinta do Jardim.
